Where to eat

Halal Places

Fifteen halal food accounts worth following, sorted by city — and how to check somewhere yourself when you have no one to ask.

Finding somewhere to eat is one of the first practical problems a new Muslim runs into, and it is rarely solved by a directory. The accounts below are run by people who eat out constantly in one city and post what they find, which is usually more current than any official list.

Halal food accounts worth following

Sorted by where they mostly eat. Most post reviews, new openings and whether a place is fully halal or only partly.

How to check a place yourself

You will not always have an account to consult. This is the short version.

Ask one specific question

Not “is it halal?” — staff will often say yes to be helpful. Ask who supplies your meat. A place that is genuinely halal answers immediately and usually names the supplier.

Check whether it is the whole menu

Plenty of restaurants serve halal meat and also serve alcohol or pork. That is a separate question from whether the chicken is halal, and worth knowing before you sit down with family.

Look for the certificate, then look at the date

A framed certificate near the till is a good sign. An expired one is a common sight. Certifying bodies differ in strictness — if it matters to you, learn which ones your local scholars accept.

Watch for shared fryers

Chips cooked in the same oil as non-halal meat are the usual gap in an otherwise careful kitchen. Ask; most staff know the answer and will tell you.

When you genuinely cannot find out. You are not required to investigate endlessly. Ask, make a reasonable judgement on the answer, and eat. Islam does not ask you to treat every meal as an interrogation, and scrupulousness that turns into anxiety is its own problem.
