How to Muslim

Science and the Quran

The Quran is not a science textbook and does not claim to be. But it describes the natural world in ways that are hard to account for in the seventh century: iron arriving from beyond the earth, mountains with roots, an expanding sky, waves beneath waves. Here are eight of them, read as signs rather than proofs.

For the longer version of this argument, with the weak claims removed, see No Design.

Islam actively encourages looking into how creation works. Understanding it is meant to increase your sense of who made it.

One thing worth saying first. The Quran is not a science textbook and does not claim to be. It is a book of guidance that happens to describe the natural world accurately, and the sensible way to read what follows is as signs worth thinking about rather than as formal proofs.

Eight things worth a look

Each one pairs what we now know with what the Quran already said.

Just a coincidence?

Scientific description is only one kind of sign in the Quran. There is also the history it records, the prophecies that came true, a literary style nobody has matched in fourteen centuries, and the effect it has on people who read it properly.

Any one of those alone might be waved away. Together they are harder to explain. They point to the same conclusion: this book came from the One who set up the laws it describes, and He is the same God who sent every prophet with the same message.

What you do with that is yours to decide. Read it and see where you land.

“We will show them Our signs in the universe and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that this Quran is the truth.”
Quran 41:53
