How to Muslim
The same ayah lands differently depending on who is reciting it. Some voices are built for the slow, unhurried style you want for memorising. Others are the ones you play in the car and suddenly cannot speak for a minute.
Sixteen reciters below, spanning Egypt, the Gulf, the Caucasus and the United States. Three of them recorded decades before the rest were born and are still the standard everyone else gets measured against. Press play on a few and see which voice you keep coming back to.
All three recorded in Egypt last century, all three gone now, and still the reference point for what Quranic recitation is supposed to sound like.
Four of these currently lead prayer at Masjid al-Haram. The rest built their following independently, mostly through YouTube, from Jeddah to Sharjah to Houston.
