How to Muslim
Nobody starts fluent. You learn the letters, then words, then verses, and the reward is written for the effort long before you are any good at it.
هُدًۭى وَرَحْمَةًۭ لِّلْمُحْسِنِينَ
As guidance and mercy for the doers of good.
Muslims hold that the Quran is the exact wording God revealed, not a report of it. Translations are explanations of the meaning, which is why recitation itself is done in Arabic even by people who do not speak it.
That is also why a translation is never called "the Quran" on its own. You will see them titled "the meaning of" or "an interpretation of" instead.
The Quran does not just claim to be inimitable, it invites the attempt: "And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant, then produce a surah the like thereof" (2:23). The challenge is set at a single chapter, and the shortest is three verses long.
The text has been transmitted unchanged for over 1,400 years, carried in writing and in memory at the same time. Millions of people alive today hold the entire book from beginning to end, which makes silent alteration effectively impossible.
The Quran describes things about the natural world that are striking for a 7th-century text. These are best read as signs pointing somewhere, not as scientific proofs, and Muslim scholars are careful not to hang belief on any one of them, since scientific understanding moves.

Stumbling over the letters is not a sign you are doing it badly. It is the state that was singled out for a double reward.
Three letters, thirty good deeds, for a syllable a beginner can manage on day one.
"Unquestionably, by the remembrance of God hearts are assured" (13:28).
People often notice this before they can explain it, and it is one of the more common things reverts describe about hearing recitation for the first time.
Regular contact with the text keeps shifting what you notice and what you excuse. That is the point of it being read daily rather than studied once.
To touch the Mushaf, the physical Arabic copy, yes. "No one should touch the Mushaf except one who is in a state of purity."
To recite, no. Reciting from memory, or reading from a phone or tablet, does not require wudu, because a screen is not the Mushaf.
If you need to handle a physical copy and you are not in wudu, holding it with a cloth or in its cover is permitted. The same applies to a woman on her period, who may recite and use a phone but does not touch the Mushaf directly.
Tajweed is the set of pronunciation rules. It matters because Arabic has several letters English does not distinguish, and getting them wrong can change what a word means.
Start with the alphabet and the sounds. The rules come later and make more sense once you can already read slowly.

Then the Bismillah, and begin. That is the whole of what is required before reciting.
