How to Muslim
You have a decision to make and you are not sure which way to go. Istikhara is the prayer for exactly that moment: you ask Allah to steer you toward whichever choice is better for you, then you act. Four steps, one dua. If you want more duas straight from the Quran for other situations, see our full list of 40 duas from the Quran. Another short dua worth learning early is Istighfar, seeking Allah’s forgiveness. And once you've prayed, close your night the way you normally would — see our dhikr before sleep guide.
O Allah, I seek guidance from Your knowledge and power from Your might.
A short walkthrough if you would rather see it than read it.
Follow the path. The dua opens up at Step 3.
Settle on the matter you want guidance about. One decision at a time.
Any voluntary two-unit prayer. If you are still learning the mechanics, start here.
Read: How to PrayAfter you finish the prayer, say the dua below and then name what you are asking about.
Say the thing out loud, in your own words, in whatever language you think in. The job, the marriage, the move. That is the part only you can fill in.
Go ahead with what seems best. Whatever opens up or closes off after that is the answer.
The bits people usually get wrong, and what to do once you have prayed.
Istikhara comes from a root meaning to seek what is good. You are not asking Allah to reveal the future. You are asking Him to steer you toward the better of two roads and to make the other one harder.
Salat al-Istikhara is two units of voluntary prayer, followed by the dua above. The order matters: pray first, then ask.
How to Pray, step by stepThe dua asks for whatever is better for your deen, your livelihood and how things end up for you. Not what is easiest. Not what you already want. That distinction is the whole point of saying it.
Once you have handed the decision to the One who knows the outcome, the loop of turning it over at 2am tends to quieten. You have done your part.
Read: Dhikr & dua for when you are feeling anxiousJabir (ra) reported that the Prophet ﷺ taught this for every matter. A house and a job qualify. So does a smaller choice you keep stalling on.
If you are on your period you cannot pray the two rak'ah, so the istikhara itself waits until you can. Nothing stops you asking Allah about the matter in dua in the meantime.
Standing in prayer before you make the request is a pattern across Islamic practice: you turn up, then you ask. Worth reading on why salah is built the way it is.
Read: The wisdom and balance of ritual prayerThis is the most common misunderstanding. The hadith says nothing about dreams. The answer comes through what Allah makes easy or difficult afterwards, not through something you see while asleep. If no dream comes, nothing has gone wrong.
Istikhara does not hand you a yes or a no. It is a request for guidance and blessing in the choice you go on to make. Nobody gets a guaranteed outcome read out to them.
Istikhara is not a substitute for thinking it through. Look into the options, ask people who know more than you, weigh it up, lean one way. Then pray. Guidance meets effort.
If you are still unsettled, pray it again. There is no cap, and repeating it is not a sign of weak faith.
Istikhara is yours to pray about your own matter. If someone offers to do it on your behalf and read you a result, that is not this.
Learn it in pieces. Use the transliteration above, keep the English meaning next to it, and say the dua in your own language for now so you actually mean what you are saying. The Arabic will come.
Read: Tips to improve your khushoo in prayerIstikhara is not a reason to freeze. Take the step that looks best, and watch what happens. Doors opening smoothly or jamming shut is the response you asked for.
You said it yourself in the dua: You know and I do not know. Meaning it after the fact is harder than saying it, which is why the last line asks Him to make you content with whatever comes.
Sometimes the thing you were hoping for falls through. That can be the answer. It rarely feels like a mercy at the time.
Read: Dhikr & dua for when you are feeling sadnessIstikhara sits inside a wider practice of turning to Allah in ordinary moments, not only at crossroads. Morning and evening dhikr is the easiest place to start.
