How to Perform Tayammum (Dry Ablution)

When there is no water, or water would harm you, tayammum takes the place of wudu and ghusl. It takes about ten seconds: one touch of clean earth, wipe the face, wipe the hands. Also spelled tayamum.

What Is Tayammum, and Where Does It Come From?

The Short Answer

What Tayammum Is

Tayammum is purification with clean earth instead of water. It stands in for wudu, and it stands in for ghusl. Once you have done it you are in a valid state of purity: you may pray, recite, touch the Mushaf, do anything you could do after wudu.

It is not a lesser version of wudu that you make up later. Prayers you pray with it are complete prayers.

Quranic Foundation

Where It Comes From

The Quran sets tayammum out twice, in the same terms both times:

And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it]. Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving. Quran 4:43
Why It Exists

The Verse Says Why

The second passage, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, gives the reason in the same breath as the ruling. This is the answer to the worry that using tayammum is somehow cutting a corner.

Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful. Quran 5:6

When Can You Use Tayammum?

When Tayammum Is Allowed

Any one of these is enough. You do not need more than one:

  • No water. None to be found after a reasonable look. You are not required to go hunting for it.
  • Water would harm you. A wound, an illness that would worsen, healing that would be set back.
  • Water is there but you cannot use it. Freezing with no way to warm it, or the only water you have is what you need to drink.
  • The prayer time would run out while you were still looking.

What Counts as Clean Earth

Anything from the ground that is clean and dry:

  • Soil, sand, clay, dust.
  • Stone, rock, brick, unpainted concrete.
  • A dusty surface indoors, such as a windowsill or a wall.
You do not need a visible cloud of dust on your hands. If the surface is clean earth or takes dust from it, that is enough.
The Case People Get Wrong

A Wound, a Cast, or a Dressing

If only part of you cannot take water, you do not do tayammum for all of it. Wash what you can wash, and wipe over the bandage or cast covering the part you cannot.

A man on a journey with a head wound was told by his companions that he had to do a full ghusl. He did, and it killed him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “They killed him, may Allah kill them! Could they not ask when they did not know? The cure for ignorance is inquiry.” It would have been enough, he said, to bind the wound, wipe over it, and wash the rest. Sunan Abu Dawud 336, narrated by Jabir — classed hasan by al-Albani

If you are unsure whether your situation counts, ask someone. That is the point of the hadith.

How Do You Perform Tayammum?

Prophetic Method

What the Prophet (peace be upon him) Actually Did

Ammar ibn Yasir became junub on a journey with no water and rolled himself in the dust, unsure what else to do. The Prophet (peace be upon him) told him that was not needed, and showed him:

He struck the earth lightly with his hands, blew off the dust, and passed his hands over his face and the backs of his hands — once only. Sahih al-Bukhari 338 and 347, also Sahih Muslim 368

One strike. Two wipes. That is the whole of it.

1

Intend It

The intention sits in the heart. There is nothing to recite and no formula to learn. Know that you are purifying yourself so you can pray, and the intention is made.

Say Bismillah as you would before wudu, then begin.
2

Touch Clean Earth, Once

Place both palms flat on clean earth, dust, stone or a dusty surface. One touch is all that is reported. If your hands come up heavy with dust, blow the excess off.

3

Wipe Your Face

Pass both palms over your whole face, once. You do not need to rub, and water is not involved at any point.

4

Wipe Your Hands

Wipe the back of the right hand with the left palm, then the back of the left with the right palm, up to the wrists. Not to the elbows.

That is it. You are in a state of purity. You can pray, recite, and hold the Mushaf exactly as you could after wudu. The same tayammum works whether you needed wudu or ghusl; there is no longer version for janabah.

What Happens Afterwards?

How Long Does It Last?

As long as your reason for it lasts, and it covers as many prayers as your wudu would. You do not renew it for every prayer.

“Clean earth is the wudu of the Muslim, even if he does not find water for ten years.” Sunan an-Nasa'i 322, narrated by Abu Dharr — classed sahih by al-Albani

What Ends It

  • Water becomes available and you are able to use it.
  • The reason ends — the wound heals, the illness passes.
  • Anything that would break wudu happens.

After that, wash as normal for the next prayer.

The Most Common Question

You Prayed, and Then You Found Water

Your prayer stands. You do not repeat it. Two men on a journey prayed with tayammum and then found water while the prayer time was still in:

One repeated the prayer, the other did not. The Prophet (peace be upon him) told the one who had not repeated: “You followed the Sunnah and your prayer was enough for you.” To the one who had, he said: “For you there is the double reward.” Sunan Abu Dawud 338, narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri — classed sahih by al-Albani

Neither man was told off. But the one who left his prayer alone is the one who was told he had it right.

Illness, a cast, a hospital stay, a long flight. If you are not certain tayammum applies to you, ask rather than guess.
