How to Perform Umrah (The Holy Pilgrimage)

Umrah is a shorter pilgrimage to Makkah you can perform any time of year, unlike Hajj. Enter Ihram at the Miqat with a clean intention, circle the Kaaba seven times, walk seven times between Safa and Marwa, then shave or trim your hair. That completes it.

What Is Umrah and Why Perform It?

The Ruling

What is Umrah?

Umrah is worship of Allah by visiting the Sacred House in a set way. Unlike Hajj it has no fixed dates, so you can go at any time of year.

Scholars differ on whether it is obligatory once in a lifetime or strongly encouraged. Either way, it is something to do once you are able to make the journey.

وَأَتِمُّوا۟ ٱلْحَجَّ وَٱلْعُمْرَةَ لِلَّهِ

“And complete the Hajj and ‘umrah for Allah.” Surah al-Baqarah 2:196 (Sahih International)
Its Virtue

A Clean Slate

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“(The performance of) ‘Umra is an expiation for the sins committed (between it and the previous one).” Sahih al-Bukhari 1773
Best Time

Umrah in Ramadan

Umrah is valid all year, but Ramadan carries the greatest reward. The Prophet (peace be upon him) told Umm Sinan, who had missed Hajj:

“Perform ‘Umra in the month of Ramadan, (as it is equivalent to Hajj or Hajj with me).” Sahih al-Bukhari 1863
The Journey

What You Will Actually Do

Four things, in order: enter Ihram at the boundary, walk seven circuits around the Kaaba, walk seven laps between Safa and Marwa, then shave or cut your hair. Three of those (the intention with Ihram, Tawaf, and Sa’i) are the pillars. Miss one and the Umrah is not done.

What Are the Steps to Perform Umrah?

1

Entering Ihram

Take a shower (ghusl), put on your Ihram clothing, and then at the Miqat make the intention in your heart and say it aloud:

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ عُمْرَةً

Labbayka Allahumma ‘Umratan “Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah.”

Then keep repeating the Talbiyah out loud until you begin Tawaf:

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ، لاَ شَرِيكَ لَكَ

Labbayka Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, inna’l-hamda wa’n-ni’mata laka wa’l-mulk, la sharika lak “Here I am at Your service, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. All praise and blessing belong to You, and the sovereignty. You have no partner.” Sahih al-Bukhari 1549
Ihram clothing Men: two unstitched white sheets, an izar and a rida. No sewn clothing, and nothing covering the head.

Women: your normal modest clothing, any colour. There is no special garment. But while in Ihram do not wear a niqab or gloves. If men pass by, you may drop a cover from your head over your face.
2

Tawaf (Circling the Kaaba)

Two sunnahs of tawaf, for menIdtiba — wear your upper garment under the right armpit so the right shoulder is uncovered, for all seven circuits. Raml — walk briskly with short, quick steps for the first three circuits, then walk normally for the last four. Both are sunnah, not required, and neither applies to women.

You need wudu for Tawaf. Make it before you start.

Walk seven circuits with the Kaaba on your left. Start and finish each circuit at the Black Stone corner. If you can reach the Black Stone, touch or kiss it and say Allahu akbar. If you cannot, point to it from a distance and say the takbir. Do not push.

There is no set dua for each circuit Ask for whatever you want, in whatever language you speak. Only one spot has fixed words: between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone, say وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةًۭ وَفِى ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ حَسَنَةًۭ وَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ “Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” Surah al-Baqarah 2:201 (Sahih International)
After the seventh circuit Pray two rak’ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if you can get near it, or anywhere in the mosque if you cannot. Surah al-Kafirun in the first, Surah al-Ikhlas in the second.
Only two things are touched The Black Stone and the Yemeni Corner. Not the other corners, not the walls, not Maqam Ibrahim.
3

Sa’i (Safa and Marwa)

Seven laps, starting at Safa and finishing at Marwa. Safa to Marwa is one lap, Marwa back to Safa is the second, and so on. This retraces Hajar running to find water for her son.

Sa’i does not need wudu If you lose your wudu partway through, carry on. Tawaf is the part that requires it.
At each end Face the Kaaba and say Allahu akbar three times, then praise Allah and make dua. Men who are able walk briskly between the two green markers. Women do not.
4

Halq or Taqsir (Cutting the Hair)

Men: shaving the whole head is better. If you trim instead, take hair from all over the head, not a snip from one side.

Women: gather the hair and cut about a fingertip’s length off the end. Women do not shave.

This is where Ihram ends Once your hair is cut you leave the state of Ihram. Everything that was off limits becomes permitted again, and your Umrah is complete.

What Is the Miqat and What Should You Recite?

Sacred Boundary

The Five Miqats

A Miqat is a boundary you cannot cross without being in Ihram. Which one is yours depends on the direction you travel from.

  • Dhul Hulayfah: from Madinah. About 420 km from Makkah.
  • Al-Juhfah: from Syria, Turkiye, Egypt and Morocco. People now enter Ihram at Rabigh nearby.
  • Qarn al-Manazil: from Najd and Taif. Now called as-Sayl al-Kabeer.
  • Yalamlam: from Yemen. Now called as-Sa’diyah.
  • Dhat Irq: from Iraq. Now called ad-Dareebah.
Passing a Miqat that is not your own is fine. Whichever one lies on your route is the one you use.
Flying In

If You Arrive by Plane

Get ready before you board. Either put your Ihram on at home, or change into it on the plane as you approach the boundary. When you are level with your Miqat, say the Talbiyah for Umrah.

If you fly past it without Ihram Go back to the Miqat and enter Ihram there. If going back is genuinely not possible, a sheep must be slaughtered in Makkah and the meat given to the poor of the Haram.
Already in Makkah

If You Live Inside the Boundary

For Umrah you cannot enter Ihram where you are. Go out past the boundary of the Haram and enter Ihram from there. Most people go to at-Tan’im.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) told Aisha to do exactly this when she wanted an Umrah while already in Makkah. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim)
While in Ihram

What You Must Avoid

  • Sewn or fitted clothing, and covering the head, for men.
  • Niqab and gloves, for women.
  • Perfume, on your body or your clothing.
  • Cutting hair or clipping nails.
  • Intercourse, and intimacy short of it.
  • A marriage contract or proposal.
  • Hunting land game.
While in Ihram

What Is Perfectly Fine

  • Sandals, even if they have stitching in them.
  • A belt or money belt to hold your izar and your cash.
  • A watch, glasses, a ring, hearing aids.
  • Showering, and washing your head and body.
  • Washing your Ihram sheets, and changing them.
  • Shade. A tent, or an umbrella over your head.
Relax

If You Slip Up

If you break one of the Ihram rules by mistake, or because you did not know, or because you were forced, you owe nothing at all. No compensation, no sin.

“And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred but [only for] what your hearts intended.” Surah al-Ahzab 33:5 (Sahih International)

How Do You Prepare for Umrah?

Get Your Legs Ready

Umrah is several miles of walking, often in heat, often at a crawl in a crowd. Start walking daily a few weeks before you fly. Drink more water than you think you need. Write your duas down beforehand, because the moment you are standing there your mind goes blank.

For Women: If Your Period Starts

You can still enter Ihram at the Miqat and say the Talbiyah. What you wait for is Tawaf, because that needs wudu, and Sa’i comes after Tawaf so that waits too. Nothing is lost. You stay in Ihram until you are pure, then complete it.

Patience Is Part of It

You will be pushed, delayed, and stuck behind someone stopping for a photo. Do not argue and do not shove, least of all near the Black Stone. The crowd is part of the worship, not an interruption of it.
